This method follows the exact process for recording the check in reverse and creates an easy-to-follow audit path.
1. Create a NSF/Other or similar receipt file if one does not already exist.
2. Post a negative check to the NSF receipt file equal to the returned item using the return date from the bank.
3. Post the NSF/Other receipt file to the check register using the return date from the bank.
4. Additionally, post a negative discount for any fee that needs to be passed along to customer that the bank has charged plus any fees the store charges, using the same GL coding.
5. Next go to the bank and create a Bank Charge for and code to same account code.
