Splitting Customer Order Lines

Why would I Split a Customer Order Line?

Use the Split Order tool in order to separate rolls, items or labor lines into multiple lines.

For example, let’s one line entry is for 200 yards of pad.  When assigning it, several different inventory records for that same type of pad are discovered, each with only a small amount available. You may have 40 yards on one record, 50 on another, and will deduct the balance of 110 yards from a newer record.  Instead of deleting the line for pad on the customer's order entry and entering three new lines, you can "split" the line.

How to Split an existing line

To split an existing line, click the Split Lines button split.gif that is located just below the customer order line area on the customer order.

This function is applicable for items and labor (product codes 03-99) and for roll goods (product codes 01 and 02), provided the roll line has not been assigned.  "Splitting" a line is used when one line has been created in order entry for a given material but when you try to assign inventory to it, it becomes obvious that assignment must come from two or more different inventory records.  Before you split a line, “lock the line total on the original line to prevent a change in the invoice total from rounding errors. This function may also be helpful when doing Partial Billings.  Original line entries may be divided and assign only those portions that to bill for.

Posting a quantity of 40 yards for the new line will create a new line for 40 yards with the identical information as the original.  The original line will then be left with a quantity of 160 yards with the respective price.  Then split that line again and create a third line for 50 yards that will reduce the quantity of the original line to 110 yards. Those lines can then be assigned to the particular inventory records to use.

If a line is split that is linked to a work order line and the Copy Work Order Note checkbox is not checked, the work order line must be regenerated in the original order after the split.  Area and notes on the work order line do not split.
